On April Fools’ Day, April 1st, Helsinki Roller Derby’s two home teams Hurtta Lottas and Saturday Fight Fever made a thrilling debut in Pasila sports hall. Night was full of glitter, excitement and tuff girls fighting each others.
Our first home bout was a success with benches full of audience. The creams on the cake were our guest announcers Lil Joker from Lincolnshire Bombers and Koko Kabama from Dolly Rockit Rollers, straight from U.K. They were indeed a well needed helping hand and made the evening perfect.
Finally when the game started, all the nervousness was gone. Hurtta Lottas was playing with the lead of Estrogeena Davis, their bench manager and Saturday Fight Fever with Tigre Force. First period was very tight and speedy. Hurtta Lottas captain Suvi together with Doris and Black Eyed Juicyfer were an unbreakable wall. Saturday Fight Fever was also giving a hard time with the lead of their captain Claire Leah Threat, together with KC Knucklebone and dangerous Lizz Troublegum. Both teams were hammering the floor like hell and the period ended in scores HL – SFF, 43-41.
After the interlude and some refreshments, audience was ready for the second rumble. Hurtta Lottas started strong and Saturday Fight Fever was spending some time on penalty bench. Hurtta Lottas’ jammer Erica was running the laps and Bambi Crushbone crushed her way through to a grand slam. Hurtta Lottas had some amazing jams and the score was soon 81-48.
Saturday fight Fever was going through some tuff times but didn’t give up and when 4 minutes left and HL jammer in the box SFF’s jammer Kata Strofi made some points and the score went to 97-79 (HL-SFF). SFF Bench Manager Tigre Force took a time out and did some magic putting all the girls with no minor penalties on the floor. So in the last jam SFF blockers were like steel and didn’t let HL jammer through so SFF made a Grand Slam and audience got wild. Final score 105-93 for the tight playing Hurtta Lottas – who became the first possessor of the prize, Golden Skate. The fight of the Golden Skate is now on and the second part will be seen in August.
This night was the best ever! Both teams felt like winners and had such an adrenaline run that we had some rough party on Bar Backstage. All the first timers played amazingly good and the night would have been nothing without the magnificent NSO’s and referees. Audience witnessed some tight game and had a really good time. Next time we’ll see on MayDay in Hell. Come check it out, the unforeseen international bout!
