Freshmeat Training Program

Think you have what it takes? Helsinki Roller Derby is now recruiting new skaters for the spring 2012 Freshmeat Training Program (FTP)! FTP lasts approximately two months and costs 80€, to be paid in full before the start of the program. Practices are held on Sundays at Tapanilan Urheilukeskus, Erätie 3, Helsinki from 11:30 to 14:00 and each session builds on the last. You are allowed to miss a couple of practices if you get sick or experience other extenuating circumstances but if you are unable to commit to the whole program now we suggest that you wait until the next FTP. The tryouts for getting in to the HRD Freshmeat Training Program are on Sunday March 18th 2012, from 10:00 to 14:00 at Tapanilan Urheilukeskus. HRD has limited room at FTP and will not be able to accept everyone that tries out. Thus we highly recommend that you attend at least one of our upcoming Open Skate -sessions before coming to tryouts — you will be able to try on equipment, meet some of the trainers and HRD skaters, and learn some of the basics such as stops, falls, and proper stance. The things that you can learn from the veteran skaters and coaches at the Open Skate will help you a great deal at tryouts. In addition, everyone trying out should make a concerted effort to come and watch at least one HRD practice before tryouts to make sure that you definitely want to commit to this sport and organization. Although roller derby is an amazing sport, it is unfortunately not for everyone

Please note: Everyone will learn what they need to know during the 9 weeks of FTP so we are not looking for just the best skaters – we are looking for skaters who are compatible with Helsinki Roller Derby. Besides your overall skills we are also taking into consideration coachability, potential, attitude, and more!

Open skate on Sunday, February 12 & March 4th

Next Open Skate -session is held on Sunday 12.2. from 17:00 to 19:00 at Tapanilan Urheilukeskus, Erätie 3, Helsinki. No registration is needed for the Open Skate. Everyone is welcome.

You will be able to borrow equipment for the Open Skate sessions; everyone is expected to wear full safety gear (mouthguards optional). Anyone wishing to borrow equipment for tryouts and during FTP must get in touch with HRD: freshmeat@helsinkirollerderby.com

We do not guarantee that we can find equipment for everyone, if you truly wish to play roller derby you should invest in your own, good equipment. If you get through tryouts and into FTP, you are expected to purchase your own gear. Come to the Open Skate -session to learn from skaters what the best pads, helmets, mouth guards and skates are, and where HRD likes to shop!

HRD practices are closed so to attend an HRD practice you must contact trainer@helsinkirollerderby.com for permission. Viewable practices are on Friday evenings and Sunday evenings. You will get the address of the practice when you contact training.
