Do you want to join Helsinki Roller Derby as a skater?

Excellent! Welcome!

This beginners’ course is for 16-year-olds and above. The FTP costs typically 120 €, which covers the weekly skating practices for 3 months. The course also includes some off-skates training and theory sessions, and attending our league’s scrimmages. There are 30 places available in each course, and they tend to go really fast!

To participate in the FTP, you will need to have your own roller derby gear (quad skates and protection), of which you can find more information below.

Before the course kicks off, Helsinki Roller Derby hosts an Open Skate Event, where you can try quad skates under experienced skaters’ supervision and hear more about this fantastic sport!

You will need your own gear, if you want to take part in our beginners’ course. Roller derby is a full-contact sport, which means that in addition to the quad roller skates (no inlines are allowed!), you will need good protective gear. The obligatory protection includes helmet, mouth guard, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards.

You can find protective gear from normal sports stores, but we recommend attaining them from shops that specialize in roller derby or at least skate boarding. Our collaborator Jam in the Box is a Finnish roller derby store, where you can order goods online, or visit the store in Kallio. If you prefer to hunt for second hand gear, we recommend joining the Derbykirppis Rollaattori Facebook group.
