Helsinki Roller Derby ALpakka, Coaching crew for the recreational league – Spring 2018

HRD’s ALpakka is looking for coaches from January 2018 to June 2018. The decision of appointing the new coach(es) is on the team.

ALpakka is the recreational team of Helsinki Roller Derby. In ALpakka everyone can enjoy roller derby without the pressure of the more competitive teams, but there’s also support for skaters who want to play in one later on in their derby careers.

The coaching crew consists of 1 to 3 coaches.

Job description for the coaching crew:

  • Season planning for the recreational team
  • Planning the training schedule, executing the plan together and attending the training sessions.
  • Discussions and feedback with players during the season and follow-up of players’ progress.
  • Giving feedback about players to aid the Team Selection Committee.
  • Being part of the team in upcoming games

The appointed coaching crew can share the tasks within the crew, finding the most suitable task for everyone according to their know-how and interest.


Helsinki Roller Derby C-Kasetti, C team coaches for season 2018

C-Kasetti is the newest travel team of Helsinki Roller Derby and an ambitious competitor on FTS rankings. In addition to reaching the highest possible FTS ranking, C-kasetti also builds new talented players for our higher travel teams, the All-Stars and the Queen Bees.

C-Kasetti is looking for coaches to guide the team during spring season 2018, from January to June 2018. After the spring season 2018, the C-Kasetti coaching season will be from August to June. The decision regarding the selection of coaches is made by the team. The coaching group is comprised of a head coach, an assistant coach and two (2) team captains. The tasks are shared, but the head coach has the main responsibility for decisions regarding team roster and playtime distribution as well as achieving team goals and results.

Job description for the head coach and the assistant coach:

  • Planning the C team season with the rest of the coaching crew and the team interleague liaison.
  • Planning the training schedule and coaching the training sessions with the rest of the coaching group
  • Creating playtime distribution and strategy plans
  • Discussions with players during the season, giving feedback to players and following players’ individual development
  • Giving feedback about skaters to aid the team selection committee
  • Participating in league departments that support and coordinate coaching
  • Participating in games as a part of the team

The persons chosen for the tasks commit to self-financed travel to both national and international games with the team. Travel will not be financially compensated as salary or travel reimbursement. Tasks can be divided within the coaching group according to the members’ areas of interest and expertise.

A coach for C-Kasetti is:

  • Positive and easily approachable
  • Open and cooperative
  • Systematic and methodical
  • Trustworthy and responsible
  • Willing and able to both give and receive feedback
  • Interested in the development of roller derby as a sport, aware of any changes to the rules of the game and other relevant things related to roller derby

Helsinki Roller Derby Queen B’s, B teams coaches for season 2018

The Queen B’s have risen significantly in the rankings over the past few years, and they’re currently one of the best B teams in Europe. They have established their place in the top 20 in European rankings. The goal of the team is to continue rising in the rankings, to challenge the best European B-teams and, in the future, also to prove themselves worthy on the other side of Atlantic Ocean!

The coaching season is 6 months (January–July) so the season is synchronized with the Suomi Cup season. The decision regarding the selection of coaches is made by the team.

The coaching group is comprised of a head coach, an assistant coach and two (2) team captains. The tasks are shared but the head coach carries the main responsibility of charter formation, playtime distribution, reaching goals and the results.

Work description for the head coach and the assistant coach:

  • Planning the B team season with the rest of the coaching group (Suomi Cup)
  • Planning the training schedule, coaching the training sessions together with the rest of the coaching group and attendance at practices
  • Creating playtime distribution and strategy plans
  • Having feedback sessions with the players during the season and following skater development
  • Giving feedback about skaters to aid the team selection committee
  • Participating in games as a part of the team

The persons chosen for the tasks commit to self-financed travel with the team to both national and international games. Travel will not be financially compensated as salary or travel reimbursement. Tasks can be divided within the coaching group as best suits the group and according to the members’ areas of interest and expertise.

The team is also looking for a Team Manager whose tasks will include:

  • helping Team Management when needed
  • scheduling while travelling

The person chosen for the task commits to self-financed travel to international games with the team. Travel will not be financially compensated as salary or travel reimbursement.


Helsinki Roller Derby All-Stars

Helsinki Roller Derby All-Stars is the representational team of Finland’s most successful roller derby league with a roster of 15 skaters.

Back in 2012 the team started to compete actively to rise in the rankings of the sports’ umbrella organisation Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA). In 2014 the All-Stars started to travel to North America with the goal to play at the highest possible level. This goal was reached 2015. Since that day the team has played at WFTDA’s DIV 1 and participated in qualification tournaments in the spring and playoffs in the fall, both in North America and Europe.

At the start of the 2017 season, the team was ranked 22nd in WFTDA’s rankings, and at the end of the season it had climbed to number 14. The goal for the future is to play at the highest possible level and succeed internationally. The team has set its goals very high, and the whole group of impressive amateur athletes are committed to work hard together to reach the goals they have set together.

The team are looking for a coaching group for season 2018:

The coaching group is comprised of a head coach, an assistant coach and two (2) team captains. The tasks are shared, but the head coach carries the main responsibility of charter formations, playtime distribution, reaching goals and results.

  • Planning the A team season with the rest of the coaching group and with the team interleague liaison. (WFTDA tournament season: qualification tournaments, Playoffs, Championships)
  • Planning the training schedule, coaching the training sessions together with the rest of the coaching group and attendance at practices
  • Creating playtime distribution and strategy plans
  • Having feedback sessions with the players during the season and following skater development
  • Giving feedback about skaters and active participation in the Team Selection committee
  • Participating in games as a part of the team

The persons chosen for the tasks commit to self-financed travel to international games with the team. Travel will not be financially compensated as salary or travel reimbursement. Tasks can be divided within the coaching group according to the members’ areas of interest and expertise.

Success in this role requires:

  • Very good communication and interaction skills
  • Interest in competitive roller derby
  • Will to develop ways of working to reach that famous next step
  • Will to develop as person as well
  • Strong decision-making skills

The coaching season spans a full calendar year (2018 – starting from January 8 – active season is on until November 2018 and after that some league tasks may come up)

The team holds the right to the final call to choose the coaches from the applicants.

The team is also looking for a Team Manager whose tasks will include:

  • Travel coordination together with the team
  • Helping Team Management when needed
  • Scheduling while travelling

The person chosen for the task commits to self-financed travel to international games with the team. Travel will not be financially compensated as salary or travel reimbursement.
