2 days of International Roller Derby – 30.4.-1.5.2011 – Double-header bout & bootcamp

The History

Helsinki Roller Derby is hosting a public international mixed scrimmage in the spring of 2011 and we invited all the European roller derby leagues (that we knew of) to find out if there is interest in such an event.
There are tons of reasons why we are going to host this event, and here are just a few:

  • Our league is new and we are the first roller derby league in Finland. As such, we see this international mixed scrimmage as an opportunity to recruit fans for the sport in this country (and Scandinavia as a whole).
  • We want to provide other newer leagues around Europe with an opportunity to play competitive roller derby in front of an audience, without the pressures of having to provide a full team roster.
  • We really feel that part of what makes a person better at playing roller derby is playing it with other people from outside of one’s own league, so providing a space for a multitude of skaters from a large variety of leagues gives us all a huge chance to learn a lot (and of course, to have lots of fun playing roller derby!).

The Event

MayDay in Hell includes two days of International roller derby.

  • Day 1 (30.4.2011) will include training and a double-header bout
  • Day 2 (1.5.2011) is all about the full-day bootcamp for skaters and referees.

We have 5 great coaches confirmed for the skaters’ bootcamp. We are working hard to get some great referees to help us give Europe’s referees a great bootcamp, too! Stay tuned for more info about the referee coaches!

You can choose to participate on Saturday, Sunday or both days.

Note: All our participants are expected to have passed their WFTDA minimum skills requirements.
